| The Negros Oriental Agriculturist Office will soon propagate the fresh water shrimp project for farmers, Provincial Agriculturist Gregorio Paltinca said yesterday.
Paltinca said fresh water shrimp is easy to raise because what is needed is only an ample supply of fresh flowing water. The shrimp, however, needs to be separated from fresh water tilapia, he added.
The municipality of Ayungon was the first to avail of the fresh water shrimp project, which proved successful during the first harvest.
The Fisheries Division of the Provincial Agricultures Office is breeding fresh water shrimp that will soon be distributed to the different farmer breeders in the province, Paltinca said.
He added that the project will help in the food security of Negros Oriental, especially for farmers living in the hinterland barangays.
There are currently 10 tilapia hatchery sites in the province, the same number of sites being proposed for the fresh water shrimp.*MA
