The National Federation of Sugarcane Planters yesterday lauded the operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation who confiscated smuggled sweeteners in Bacolod City Thursday.
NFSP president Enrique Rojas said in a press release that the raid on Kioks store did the sugar industry and the public a favor because “magic sugar” or sodium cyclamate is harmful to people's health.
An NBI team led by special investigator Syrus Aluzan seized 67 plastic packs of “magic sugar” with the name Gold Bell Brand from the business outfit after an informant tipped them that the store has been selling the banned “cancerous” products at P20 per pack.
Studies conducted by the Health and Trade and Industry departments showed that sodium cyclamate contains cancer-causing substances, Aluzan said.
The NFSP said that “magic sugar” is a popular artificial sweetener among some food producers because even a small amount could sweeten a large amount of food or liquid, and it is much cheaper than real sugar.
The NBI is on the right track in running after the suppliers of “magic sugar”, which can have adverse effects to the sugar industry and the public, the federation head said.*PP
