The spotlight will fall on hometown boy James Yap as pacesetter Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants collide with the Air 21 Express at 4:30 p.m. today in a PBA Smart-Philippine Cup road game at the West Negros College Gym.

Born and raised in Escalante City , the 25-year-old Yap , Purefoods' chief gunner, will be playing his first game in the province since he turned pro in 2004.

“I'm happy to be here. Hopefully, I could come up with a good game to please the fans,” Yap told the DAILY STAR before joining his club for practice at the WNC Gym, which is hosting a PBA road game for the second time this year.

It was a story of final-day surges as athletes from Bacolod City's public schools and the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural and Educational Association split top honors yesterday at the close of the 2007 Palarong Panlalawigan.

Bacolod, representing Area VII, came-from-behind to retain the elementary crown, while NOPSSCEA, running third heading into the last day of the competitions, willed its way to two major team titles to end a long drought in the high school division.

The NOPSSCEA victory formally snapped the two-year domination of Area IV, which finished third in both divisions.

The maiden staging of Visayas Cup 35-above Football Tournament kicks off today at the University of St. La Salle football field.

Hosted by Bacolod United Football Club, the tournament has attracted eight teams coming from Barotac Nuevo, Santa Barbara and La Paz in Iloilo, San Carlos City, Cebu and two from the host club.

Among the players seeing action for the competing squads are former national team players like Alfredo “Bambi” Dioso Jr. and Norman Fegidero Jr. who both played for the country during the 1991 Manila Southeast Asian Games when the Philippines defeated Malaysia, 1-0, courtesy of a goal by Fegidero.
