Troopers discover
gravesite of rebels
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Patrolling soldiers of the 61 st Infantry Battalion discovered a grave site of the New People's Army in Brgy. Mantakil, Siaton, Negros Oriental, on Saturday, the military said yesterday.

Lt. Col. Romeo Basco, 61 st Infantry Battalion commander, said the skeletal remains discovered in the grave site were of a certain Ka Ere, who was killed in an encounter with members of the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade on March 2005, in Brgy. Tayac, Siaton, Negros Oriental.

Basco said the discovery of the grave site prompted them to inspect the nearby areas for more burial grounds of the New People's Army.

Military records show that five members of the New People's Army who used to be operating in Negros Oriental, surrendered to the 61 st IB, bringing along their firearms in order to avail of the government's Balik-Baril program.*GPB
