TO THWART TERRORISM
Avsecom to enforce
tight airport security
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A three-day seminar was recently conducted by the Avsecom Security Group in Dumaguete City , as a preventive measure against terror threats.

Citing the recent bombing incidents in different parts of the country, including that in the Batasan Pambansa, Avsecom Security Group commander Capt. Gazba Miller Guzman stressed the importance of checking the baggage of every personnel in the airport.

Training participants included concessionaires, pedicab drivers, personnel from the Air Transportation Offfice, security agencies manning the airport, cargo handling personnel, the Civil Security Unit, and representatives of airline companies.

Guzman said personnel with airport-issued IDs, including managers of airline companies, should also voluntarily submit their baggages for inspection.

He said he does not discount the possibility that personnel who have access to the airport would be used by terrorists to carry explosives or bombs.

The new AVSECOM chief in Dumaguete also cited the role of concessionaires, vendors and drivers in securing the airport in the city.

Unattended belongings, and bags left behind in any part of the airport area should be reported immediately to the assigned agency, Guzman pointed out.

He said he will not allow the airport to look like a market place, pointing out that restricted areas must be respected at all times.

Other resource persons are Nick Tagle of the National Bureau of Investigation and Capt. Reynaldo Lechido of the provincial police command.

Tagle encouraged participants to contribute in the prevention aspect and not to disregard minute information especially on matters affecting airport security.*JG
