Rallies peaceful; PNP on red alert

The rallies held in Negros Oriental to commemorate yesterday's Human Rights Day were peaceful, police provincial director, Senior Supt. Ramon Melvin Buenafe, said.

However, preemptive measures set up by the police to thwart any terror threats will remain and the PNP will still be on a red alert status in guarding areas vulnerable to attacks, he said.

“We are not sitting down. Checkpoints, patrol of areas, and other security measures are in place,” Buenafe told the DAILY STAR yesterday.

The family members of 53 civilians who were victims of assassination activities by the New People's Army in Negros island, yesterday marked the celebration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in Guihulngan, Negros Oriental, by reiterating their call for justice.

2Lt. Mark Andrew Posadas, 11 th Infantry Battalion Civil Military Operations officer, yesterday said more than 400 residents in upland barangays of Isabela, Negros Occidental, Canlaon City and Guihulngan, participated in a forum denouncing the atrocities perpetrated by the rebels against their respective family members.

NegOr students invited
for exchange program

Young students from Negros Oriental were re-invited to a 10-day Visit to Japan as part of the Japan-East Asia Network of Exchange for Students and Youths Programme in May next year, a press release from local coordinators said.

The National Youth Commission, with the Japan International Cultural Center of the Embassy of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Centere invited them as student ambassadors and supervisors.

The first batch will leave from May 13 to 22, 2008 and the second batch on May 20-29, 2008, the press release said.
