| Lighting up the Lunok or Balete Tree in front of the Hall of Justice to symbolize Christmas is a five-year dream coming true for Judge Jose Paolo Ariola.
For four years, Ariola said he noticed that among the buildings in the area, the Hall of Justice seemed to lack the “spirit of Christmas” in terms of decorations.
Three weeks ago, he asked his friends and fellow judges to contribute for the lighting of the Lunok Tree. The “coercive persuasion” worked and everyone started giving his share for the lights, Ariola said.
The funds raised by Ariola were more than enough for the Lunok, giving him and his friends the opportunity to also decorate with lights the palm trees within the grounds of the Hall of Justice.
Judge Gorgonio Ybañez also offered to buy a star for the Lunok Tree to complete the picture, Ariola said. He fondly calls the project the “The Star and the Tree of Justice.”
Growing up in a family that values Christmas traditions is Ariola's motivation to light up the grounds of the Hall of Justice.
Among his happiest memories, he said, is opening his gift from his mother. Lack of material wealth he said was not a reason to forego simple Christmas presents, he said.
This year, he wants everyone in the Hall of Justice to experience the joy of Christmas through the lighted Lunok Tree.
The sight may not be impressive at daytime when people who frequent the Hall of Justice are busy with their routine but at nighttime it is a sight to behold.
Ariola said he is grateful that the employees as well as he fellow judges at the Hall of Justice shared his enthusiasm to light the Lunok Tree.
He hopes that lighting the tree is the start of a new Christmas tradition for all of them.*NAB
