zero in on golds

Bagoeño Larry Semillano and Godfrey Castro of Cadiz City led another hard Philippine charge in boxing yesterday as they disposed of their different foes yesterday to assure themselves of silver medals in the 24 th Southeast Asian Games in Nakhon Ratchasima , Thailand .

Semillano, a featherweight gold medallist 10 years ago, shut out Erico Kefin Keygen Amanupunyo of Indonesia , 12-0, in the lightwelterweight semifinals at the Tumbon Mueangpug Stadium.

Castro, bronze medallist in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, just needed to show up for his scheduled bout against Karim Mohammad Ali Abdul of Malaysia, who lost by default.

16 golds at stake
as Palaro begins

Sixteen gold medals are up for grabs today at the start of the 2007 Palarong Panlalawigan athletics competitions at the University of St. La Salle oval in Bacolod City .

Athletes from nine contingents in the elementary division and 10 teams in the high school category will battle for the golds in the boys and girls' long jump, shot put, triple jump and 100-meter sprint.

Also scheduled today are the trials in the girls 100m hurdles, boys 110m hurdles and the 800m events in all levels.

RP stays in fourth

Pool player Rubilen Amit and rower Benjie Tolentino sparkled on an otherwise inauspicious day for the Philippines in the 24 th Southeast Asian Games in Thailand yesterday.

Tolentino topped the lightweight singles sculls at the Mab Pratchat Reservoir in Pattaya City , for his second gold. He combined with Jose Rodriguez in topping the men's double sculls Saturday.

Amit beating Angeline Magdalena Ticoalu of Indonesia, 7-5, in the finals at the Sima Thani Hotel Grand Ballroom for a second straight gold.
