16 golds at stake
as Palaro begins

Sixteen gold medals are up for grabs today at the start of the 2007 Palarong Panlalawigan athletics competitions at the University of St. La Salle oval in Bacolod City .

Athletes from nine contingents in the elementary division and 10 teams in the high school category will battle for the golds in the boys and girls' long jump, shot put, triple jump and 100-meter sprint.

Also scheduled today are the trials in the girls 100m hurdles, boys 110m hurdles and the 800m events in all levels.

Area IV, represented by athletes from Pontevedra, Pulupandan, Valladolid , San Enrique, La Carlota City and Bago City , ruled the high school boys' category last year, while Area III composed of Murcia , Victorias , Silay and Talisay athletes took the girls' crown.

Anchored on the theme “Pagmamahal, Pagkakaisa Tungo sa Kapayapaan at Magandang Kinabukasan,”, the provincial meet formally opened at the Panaad Park and Stadium yesterday.

With the entry of the Association of Negros Occidental Private Schools and School Administrators Inc., the number of contingents in the high school division increased to 10. ANNOPSAI is also the ninth team in the elementary category.

The medal-rich swimming event unfolds Tuesday at the Panaad Olympic pool with NOPSSCEA expected to dominate.

Action in other events, except boxing and taekwondo, also begin today in different venues.

Also set at USLS are elementary basketball, lawn tennis and volleyball.

Arnis, elementary football, secondary tennis, softball, swimming and taekwondo are set at the Panaad park, while secondary basketball will be held at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center .

West Negros College will host secondary football and chess, while sepak takraw will be played at the Mansilingan Agro-Industrail High School Covered Court .

The other venues are Riverside College of Nursing courts (badminton), Lopue's San Sebastian (elementary table tennis), BCNHS (baseball), Negros Occidental Teachers Federation gym (gymnastics and dancesport).*CPT
