zero in on golds

Bagoeño Larry Semillano and Godfrey Castro of Cadiz City led another hard Philippine charge in boxing yesterday as they disposed of their different foes yesterday to assure themselves of silver medals in the 24 th Southeast Asian Games in Nakhon Ratchasima , Thailand .

Semillano, a featherweight gold medallist 10 years ago, shut out Erico Kefin Keygen Amanupunyo of Indonesia , 12-0, in the lightwelterweight semifinals at the Tumbon Mueangpug Stadium.

Castro, bronze medallist in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, just needed to show up for his scheduled bout against Karim Mohammad Ali Abdul of Malaysia, who lost by default.

Also assured of silver medals were Junie Tizon of Bago City , who advanced to the middleweight finals with a 14-8 decision over Duc Trong Hua of Vietnam , and Orlando Tacuyan Jr., who ousted Burmese pug Yan Soe Naung following a 15-10 win in the featherweight division.

The victories compensated for the one-sided setback suffered by another Bagoeño, Bill Vicera, who was stopped by Kaeo Pongprayon of Thailand , winner by referee-stopped-contest outscored at the 1:45 mark of round 3. Vicera settled for the bronze.

Bacolod City-born Albert Pabila, who hails from Barangay Handumanan, is also assured of a bronze after a 19-15 victory over Kyaw Aung Swar of Myanmar Saturday night in the light flyweight quarterfinals.

But Pabila will be the underdog when he meets Thailand 's Amnat Ruenroeng in the semis on Tuesday.

Also in contention is Bago's Junel Cantancio, a 29-14 winner over Myanmar 's Than Htaik Saturday night. Cantancio took 2005 gold medallist Joan Tipon's place in the bantamweight division.

Another Bagoeño coming out on top Saturday was Joegin Ladon, who posted a 22-5 demolition of Ratha Syay of Cambodia to barge into the lightweight semifinals.

Ladon is in line for another possible championship duel with Thai fighter Pichai Sayota, who scored a controversial win against him in the 2005 SEAG in Bacolod .

But Ladon has to overcome Malaysian Paulus Paunandes first on Wednesday to get another shot at Sayota.

Meanwhile, Mitchel Martinez of Pulupandan and Bacolod City opens her defense of the gold medal she won in Bacolod City two years ago against Manivone Phimsomphou of Laos in the lightweight semifinals.*CPT
