| The Sagay Marine Reserve, Sagay City, Negros Occidental was awarded second best in the Marine Protected Areas Support Network Awards and Recognitions Event, Terence Paul Dacles, GTZ Program Coordinator for Region VI, said yesterday.
Topping the event was 1 st Placer Handumon Marine Sanctuary of Getafe Bohol, while the 3 rd Place went to Twin Rocks Marine Sanctuary of Mabini, Batangas, the press release said.
This year's finalists are the Buluan Island Marine Sanctuary of Ipil, Zamboanga; Iniban Marine Reserve of Ayungon, Negros Oriental; Harka Piloto Reef Fish Sanctuary of Calapan City, Mindoro Oriental; Capandan Fish Sanctuary of Cortes, Surigao del Sur; Agsalin Fish Sanctuary of Gloria, Oriental Mindoro; and the Militar, Sugod, Sto.Nino and Tagulo MPA of Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur.
The MPSN was among the results of the Annual National Marine Sanctuary Workshops held from 2002-2003 supported by the Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization Act.
The MSN aims to facilitate the coordination among various agencies and institutions for the sustainable management of the country's coastal and marine resources, the press release said.
MSN coordinator Dr. Porfirio Alino said that the MPA Awards and Recognition is being promoted because it believes that the establishment of incentives system, standards and processes for the management of the coastal ad marine resources will help strengthen and sustain the current management efforts.
Present during the Awards Ceremonies at the Celebrity Sports Plaza in Quezon City was Sagay Vice Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva, Mayo Antonio Cueva, Councilor Chris Escario, NNARMAC Executive Director Michelle Reyes, Dacles, GTZ Program Coordinator for Region VII Mary Ann Tercero, and Eva Abad, PCRM Unit Head of Southern Leyte.*
