| The St. La Salle Mass Communications Department gained unprecedented recognition when its publication, The LEAD, won two of the three major awards in the 2007 College Press Conference held in Iloilo City Friday last week, a press release from event organizers said.
The LEAD also won its second Graciano Lopez-Jaena Award for excellence in campus journalism in three years, the award being presented by the organizing Philippine Information Agency by virtue of its winning the two trophies – Best College Magazine and Best Departmental Publication – for the second consecutive year.
Taking the Best Newspaper award was LIFELINE, the publication of the College of Nursing of West Visayas State University . More than 40 college publications participated in the competition, said Elsa Subong, PIA regional training officer.
The LEAD had earlier won two Graciano Lopez-Jaena trophies for excellence in campus journalism in 2005, after winning three-years-in-a-row the Best College Newspaper and Best Departmental Publication award, the press release said.
The USLS MassComm paper won the two top trophies this year after winning the Best News, Best Editorial, Best Features and Best Sports pages and finishing second in the Best Magazine layout category.
LEAD Editors Adrian Bobe, Floredeliz Mahinay, Karen Vargas, Kate Bernardo and senior editor Carrie Franz Mendoza received the trophies from PIA national and regional officials.
In individual writing competitions, The LEAD writers won five medals with Aries Cariño winning first in Filipino copyreading and third in news writing; Mahinay, third in English copyreading; as well as Ann Margaret Echarri and Alexander Cuyoca, also third place in English editorial and cartooning, respectively.
Echarri, a MassComm senior, was also declared Miss WV College Press Conference and received the best in Interview and Miss Personality special awards.

LCC club to hold
outdoor campaign
The Environmentalist Community club of La Consolacion College in Bacolod City will hold its annual Healthy Trails Day, Dec. 8 to 9, at Sitio Campuestuhan, Brgy. Patag, Silay City , a press release from the group said.
For three years now, students and professionals are joining the outdoor campaign to clean the trekking trails of the Northern Negros Natural Park, particularly that leading to the frequently visited Tinagong Dagat.
The activity, held in cooperation with the LCC-B center for Green Initiatives and the Butlak Banaag Mountaineering Society Inc., is also aimed at maintaining the forest ecosystem, the press release said.
