The season continues

Silliman University's oh so very active and astute Cultural Affairs Committee led by Professor Susan Vista-Suarez launched the second season of the school year 2007 -2008 with it's now looked for formal affair at the foyer of the world famed Claire Luce Auditorium.

The evening started with the “dressed to the nines” (ladies in long gowns, elegant pants outfit, or cocktail frocks and gentlemen in either suits or “barongs”) guests walking the Hollywoodish red carpet and interviewed by our local queen of gab Glynda Discuatan. Our cultural glitterati and cognoscenti sipped choice red and white wines and sat in well appointed tables, chatted with keen recollection of the just passed so successful first season, and eagerly anticipated what was behind the veiled tarpaulins. The “patrons of the arts” clapped enthusiastically as the “tarps” were uncovered and “voila” six choice shows were announced. Dinner followed and “après” was a mad rush to the subscription table to purchase the season tickets.

Premiering last November 10 was a double-bill of award winning one act plays by Chris Martinez and Dennis Teodosio – “Welcome to IntelStar” and “Gee-gee at Waterina.” Both well received and applauded. Next in line is a one man performance by legendary violin maestro, complete with master strokes and “up-to-the-beat” body movements, Jay Cayuca. To usher in the New Year, Philippine Dean of Tenors, Ramon Acoymo, will mesmerize us with a concert that will showcase his fantastic talent. Following closely will be a dance concert by critically acclaimed contemporary dance company under Douglas Nieras' “Powerdance.” In time for the season of love – Valentines, Bart Guingona and Pinky Amador will read to us “Love Letters.” A bittersweet, romantic comedy by A. R. Gurney, Jr., performed all over the globe and translated to many tongues, this highly entertaining piece traces the life long correspondence between two lovers. Saving the very best of the best for last is the “U. P. Guitar Orchestra in Concert.” They will be playing from “Bach to Gershwin.”

The Cultural Affairs Committee is also presenting a new set of speakers for the Albert Faurot Lecture Series on culture and the arts, amongst them will be visual artists Kitty Taniguchi and Jutsze Pamate, photographer John Stevenson, and poet Myrna Peña-Reyes.

The second cultural season will definitely be a more vibrant and exciting renaissance. See you at the Luce!........NOUS!*
