PWDs' day celebrated

The annual International Day of Disabled Persons on the theme "Decent Work for Persons with Disabilities" will be celebrated today, a press release from Melchor Tumbos, President of AKAPINOY said.

It is aimed at promoting understanding of disability issues, and mobilizing support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, the press release said.

The observance also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life, the press release added.

The World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons, adopted by the General Assembly in 1982, aims to achieve the full and equal enjoyment of human rights and participation in society by PWDs.

This year's celebration also focuses on how to ensure decent work for PWDs and on ways to tap into the abilities of this marginalized talent pool. The recently adopted Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities recognizes their rights to work and employment on an equal basis with others.

It will look at new ways in which their inclusion in the labor market may be promoted by governments, private sector, and civil society, including the disability community.

These include programs such as supported employment, social enterprises, cooperatives, on the job disability management (job retention and return to work measures), and on the promotion of entrepreneurship, self employment and viable micro and small businesses, the press release added.*
