Cost -sharing pushed
for barangay projects
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Rep. George Arnaiz (Neg. Or., 2nd District) has urged barangay officials in Dumaguete City to implement projects through cost-sharing and to set aside political bickering.

The best way in undertaking projects is “kurambos” (cost-sharing) among local government units, Arnaiz, former governor of Negros Oriental, said at the mass oath-taking of barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials, Thursday, at the City High School gymnasium in Dumaguete.

He also told the village chiefs to share a little of their powers, as through this, he was able to get the support of all the members of the provincial council, while he was still chief executive of the province.

Arnaiz encouraged barangay kagawads to think of priority projects that have strong impacts on the lives of their constituents, and they will be supported by politicians.

Meanwhile, the solon told the SK officials to perform as expected of them, and to start right.

Mayor Agustin Perdices told both reelected and neophyte barangay officials not to be discouraged by the task ahead of them. He said the demand for services will always be greater than the supply of money.

The mayor also laid down the thrust of his administration in giving priority attention to poverty alleviation.

“Lets adopt a common vision to reduce incidence of poverty in Dumaguete,” Perdices pointed out. He said, the city expects to receive an increase of P5 million in internal revenue allotment shares, which the barangays can avail of in terms of livelihood projects rather than infrastructure projects.

Perdices, however, stressed that this is not a dole-out.

Vice Mayor Woodrow Maquiling enjoined the new set of barangay officials to serve their respective constituents with humility, as models and putting Christ in the center of all their undertakings.*JG
