League of mayors
backs Arroyo gov't
'ECONOMY ROBUST'
BY MARICAR ARANAS & RENE GENOVE

The League of City Mayors of the Philippines is behind President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo despite the calls of Oakwood mutiny leader-turned-senator Antonio Trillanes IV for her to step down from Malacañang.

Mayor Hector Villanueva of Bais City , Negros Occidental, yesterday said that league president, Mandaluyong Mayor Benjamin Abalos Jr., called him up after the Magdalo soldiers took over the Manila Peninsula Hotel in Makati , Thursday afternoon.

Villanueva said the league is supporting Arroyo, who was urged to resign by the renegade Magdalo soldiers led by Trillanes and Brigadier General Danilo Lim, and some civilians, including former Vice President Teofisto Guingona.

Trillanes move moral

The Kilusang Mayo Uno Labor Center in Negros yesterday said the call for the resignation of President Gloria Arroyo by renegade soldiers led by Sen. Antonio Trillanes and Gen. Danilo Lim is morally and politically right.

This will serve as a call for the Filipino people to push further the campaign to oust Arroyo, KMU Negros spokesperson Ronald Ian Evidente said.

In a statement the group issued, it said that this signals another wave of the ouster campaign against Arroyo. The Manila Peninsula siege reflects the discontent of the people in the administration that is again also alive within the ranks of armed forces, it said.

BSP lauds seizure of coins
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Officials of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in Dumaguete City lauded the police for confiscating a large amount of coins from a well-known illegal numbers game financier on Nov. 23, in Barangay Calindagan, Dumaguete City .

Police said at least four huge buckets filled with coins in various denominations, aside from bills, were seized by the raiding team from the runner of the illegal numbers games “Suertres” and “Pick 3.”

The PNP has requested BSP officers to help them count the coins accurately, as they will be used as evidence in court.
