| Officials of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in Dumaguete City lauded the police for confiscating a large amount of coins from a well-known illegal numbers game financier on Nov. 23, in Barangay Calindagan, Dumaguete City .
Police said at least four huge buckets filled with coins in various denominations, aside from bills, were seized by the raiding team from the runner of the illegal numbers games “Suertres” and “Pick 3.”
The PNP has requested BSP officers to help them count the coins accurately, as they will be used as evidence in court.
Josie Resurreccion of the BSP cash unit department said the haul of hundreds of thousands of coins is a big boost to their campaign to them.
She said the campaign was launched in schools due to loss of coins in circulation, only to find out that these are in the hands of illegal numbers game financiers.
Resurreccion added that the production of coins entails a huge amount of money, aside from the shipping cost. She said they were thinking all along that these coins are kept in piggy banks in the homes, but the raid was a revelation that more could still be in the hands of other financiers in the city and in Negros Oriental.
The BSP said the shortage of coins has affected the circulation in the market, and some businessmen have been complaining about this.*JG
