A sports summit is being mulled by officials tasked by Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia to streamline the city government's sports program.

Secretary to the mayor, Goldwyn Nifras, Wednesday said he will broach the idea of holding a sports summit when he meets with Leonardia today.

The proposal to hold the summit surfaced after meeting with Executive Assistant Benjie Torre and Adrian Melocoton of the City's Office of Youth and Sports Program. Nifras, who is also the city agriculturist, disclosed that the reconvening of the Bacolod City Sports Council has yet to start, two months into Leonardia's second term.

Former Philippine triathlon team standout Noel Salvador showed he had more than enough gas left in his tank, ruling the Cebu leg of the National Age-group Triathlon Series Sunday in Sogod, Cebu.

A veteran of the 2005 Southeast Asian Games, the 33-year-old Salvador established a slender lead after the 1-km swim phase, kept his composure in the 30-km. bike race, before producing a strong finish in the 7.5-km run to clock 1 hour, 20 minutes and 37 seconds. Salvador was actually hot on the heels of Biagan and Calinawan heading the final 100 meters of the race, before sprinting his way to victory.

The winning time was 14 minutes and 54 seconds better than second placer former National Team member Alberto Biagan of Cebu.

Baclao instrumental
in Ateneo's victory
BY CEDELF TUPAS

Sivirino Baclao, the lanky forward from Bacolod City, last night proved instrumental in Ateneo De Manila University's pulsating 72-71 win over defending champion University of Sto. Tomas in the UAAP collegiate basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum last night.

The 6-foot-4 Baclao, a transferee from West Negros College, pumped in 11 points, hauled seven rebounds and swatted two shots in 26 minutes of action. With Ateneo trailing 55-61 with four minutes left, Baclao nailed two free throws and converted a jumper from close-range to cut the lead to two.

The Blue Eagles, losing finalists to UST last year, went on to nip the Tigers as American rookie Kirk Long stroked home an off-balanced jumper from the right flank as time expired.
