Velasco, Roel Velasco and Leopoldo Serrantes. Add Joan Tipon, Reynaldo Galido
and Elias Recaido Jr. The Negros Occidental Provincial Government and
the Negros Amateur Boxing Association hopes to produce boxers who could emulate
the achievements of these six world-class amateur pugilists by staging the Inter-Club/LGU
Amateur Boxing Tournament at the NABA Gym in the Paglaum Sports Complex in Bacolod
City on Sept. 8. There will be 12 weight classes in the competition. These
are the 26, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 45, 45 and 51 kg. divisions, Ma. Cecilia
Oyos, the provincial boxing coordinator, said. Only boxers born on or
after Jan. 1, 1989 will be allowed to see action in the tournament, which will
adapt the double-elimination system. Oyo said boxers who won medals in any provincial
level competitions will be seeded. The number and duration of rounds are
also varied depending on the weight category with the 26-36 kg. division boxers
fighting for three rounds with each round lasting a minute. The 38-40 kg. pugs
will battle for three rounds with one and a half minute each per round, less than
a round for boxers in the 42-51 kg. classes. So far, 22 squads have signed
up for the tournament with 11 Bacolod barangays fielding entries. Expected to
see action are teams from Barangays Taculing, Punta Taytay, Banago, Granada, Pahanocoy,
Cabug, Sum-ag, Alijis, Handumanan, Felisa and 21. The LGUs fielding entries
are Candoni, Bago (Calumangan and Taloc), Binalbagan (Payao), Hinigaran, La Carlota
City, Escalante City, Talisay City,Moises Padilla, Sagay City and Pontevedra.
The Velasco brothers are products of Bago's boxing program. Mansueto took the
silver in the Atlanta Olympics in 1996, four years after Roel claimed a bronze
in the Barcelona Games. Leopoldo Serrantes was a bronze winner in the Seoul Olympiad
in 1988. The three fighters competed in the lightflyweight division. Tipon
and Recaido of Bacolod City as well as Galido of Bago City are Asian Games gold
medalists. *CPT back to top
