Transfer of prov'l jail
to Bago in '08 eyed
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Maraņon yesterday said the construction of a new provincial jail in Bago City may begin next year.

Maraņon said he discussed with Local Governments Undersecretary Oscar Panadero his proposal to transfer the Negros Occidental Provincial Jail in Bacolod City to Abuanan, Bago City.

The DILG officials agreed in principle that if the provincial government constructs the jail, they will take over its management, which will mean savings of about P15 million a year, the governor said. So if we spend P60 million in about four years time we will recover it, he said.

The provincial government will have to coordinate with the DILG on the construction of the jail, he said.

The Bago site has already been inspected by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology people and they seem to be agreeable to the area, he said.

Negotiations are on going, and as soon as we get the approval for the DILG to absorb the management of the jail, the provincial government will begin construction sometime next year, he said.*CPG
