Negros Occidental has topped the list of Police Regional Office 6 in the incidence of crimes against person and property, and in the implementation of special laws, compared to the five other provinces in Western Visayas, police records show.

Records of PRO 6 show that 291 index crimes were committed in Negros Occidental, followed by Iloilo with 234, and Capiz with 169, from January to July this year.

In the enforcement of special laws, also known as non-index crimes, Negros Occidental again topped the list of PRO 6 with 161, Aklan - 95 and Iloilo - 75. However, the crime volume in Negros Occidental registered at 359 in the past six months of 2002, showed a reduction of almost two percent compared to crimes committed last year, which was 365.

The average monthly crime rate in Negros Occidental also registered at three incidents per 100,000 population.

Non-index crimes are related to the implementation of special laws such as campaign against illegal fishing. gambling, drugs, carnapping, cattle rustling and violation of forestry laws.

Supt. Ruperto Floro, PRO 6 chief of the Operations and Plans Division, in his briefing during the regular Regional Peace and Order Council meeting held yesterday at Camp Martin Delgado, Iloilo, also reported that the Western Visayas police was also cited by Camp Crame in the enforcement of the gun ban during the election period, which resulted in the confiscation of 258 firearms.

Almost 45 percent of the firearms recovered during the implementation of the gun ban that totaled 108, was done by the Negros Occidental police, police records also showed. RPOC members also nominated Iloilo Gov. Neil Tupas to chair the Western Visayas RPOC.*GPB
