Foreign firms eyeing
mining sites in NegOr
BY ROMY AMARADO

Several firms from Australia, Singapore and China have applied for permits to conduct mining explorations in Basay, Oriental Negros, provincial attorney Erwin Vergara said.

He said these companies indicated interest in exploring gold and copper deposits in Basay, a town about 130 kilometers of Dumaguete City.

Vergara said the mining firms may also be interested in exploring iron ore, sulfur and manganese deposits in the towns of Amlan, San Jose, Pamplona and Manjuyod.

Sexagenarian killed near bar
BY RENE GENOVE

A sexagenarian was mauled to death as he was leaving a videoke bar at 11 p.m., Sunday, in Barangay Maloh, Siaton, Oriental Negros.

Santiago Callo alias "Abo", 60, married, of Sitio Umlog, Barangay Maloh was found sprawled on the ground after allegedly being mauled by Ronald Tulabing, 22, single, a farmer and resident of Sitio Olayan, Barangay Maloh.

Alfredo Sabroso, of legal age, told police investigators that he saw the victim walking out of the videoke bar along the national highway going to the barangay road.

'Lack of PDEA men
affecting drug raids'
BY ROMY AMARADO

A high ranking police officer in Oriental Negros said recently that the absence of Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency personnel in the province has adversely affected the campaign against illegal drugs.

Chief Inspector Julius Muņez, 705th Provincial Mobile Group director, said they find difficulty in conducting drug raids because Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, requires the presence of a PDEA personnel during an operation. The presence of representatives from the Prosecutor's Office, media, and barangay, is also required, he said.

Muņez said policemen detailed to PDEA were pulled out on July 4 this year. This hampered their plans to conduct raids on suspected drug lairs, he added.
