Peace pact eyed
to end gang wars

BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Dumaguete City police force is drawing up measures to put a stop to gang wars that has alarmed parents and the community, Inspector Errol Garchitorena said.

He said they received feelers from members of the BLOODs and CRIPS groups about their desire to come up with a peace pact.

Garchitorena said members of the BLOODs are willing to settle the rift with counterparts of the CRIPS, and hoped the latter gang would do the same.

A cross-section of the community will be invited to witness the signing of the peace pact, including prominent persons whose names were mentioned by chief of police Supt. Dionardo Carlos in his report to the city council recently.

Garchitorena said they will invite Bais City Mayor Hector "Tata" Villanueva during the initial meeting, for him to know the real score about his son's alleged membership with Bloods. Villanueva had questioned published reports naming him as the father of one of the members.

He called for an investigation into revelations made by Carlos to clear his son's name.

On the other hand, Carlos said he had no intention of maligning any one's reputation when he made the report. The bigger issue is how to put a stop into this growing social problem, he pointed out.

He clarified, though, that members of the gang themselves, not he, had mentioned the mayor's son as a member of the gang, following a mauling incident in February this year.*JG
