| Suspected New People's Army hitmen struck again yesterday killing
another barangay captain in Brgy. Imelda, Guihulngan, Oriental Negros, the military
said. The fatality was identified as Imelda Brgy. Capt. Sebastian Tanoy,
while Kagawad Avelino Denlauso sustained bruises. Both were very vocal against
NPA atrocities in the town's upland barangays, Lt. Col. Jess Manangquil, 11th
Infantry Battalion commander, said. Tanoy Jr. and Denlauso were riding
on a motorcycle to the town proper when they were waylaid by three unidentified
young men who were armed with .45 caliber pistols in Sitio Lip-o, Brgy. Imelda,
Guihulngan, Managquil said. Manangquil said the three gunmen simultaneously
opened fire at the two barangay officials, hitting Tanoy on the head, twice on
the shoulders and twice on his back. Denlauso managed to escape from their assassins,
he added. Tanoy is the second barangay captain gunned down by rebels in the past
eight months, next to a village chairman of Aya in La Libertad, whose ambush on
May was claimed by the NPA, military records show. Manangquil said a barangay
kagawad in Guihulngan was also liquidated by rebel hitmen last year. The series
of liquidation activities of the CPP-NPA in central Negros further bolsters claims
that they are actively involved in extra-judicial killings, Manangquil said.*GPB
