NOHS bets top Math challenge

The Negros Occidental High School in Bacolod City won first place in both individual and team category of the 2007 Regional Metrobank MTAP DepEd Math Challenge held recently at Iloilo National High School, Iloilo City, a press release from NOHS said.

Their scores in both individual written and team categories topped the whole Regions in the Visayas and qualified the school for the National Finals held April 13-14, at Metrobank Plaza, Makati City. Roy Roque Rivera Jr., the individual contestant, teamed with J. Kenneth Jalandoni. Both are fourth year high school students of NOHS and graduated as Valedictorian in Special Science Class and Salutatorian of Regular class, respectively, this school year, the press release said.

The two were recognized as the top scorer in the Visayas geographical area together with their coach, Josette Terrora, a Math teacher, at the awarding ceremonies of the 2007 national finals in Makati.

Among eight regions in the country which qualified for the national finals, Rivera ranked second in the Individual Written category and was invited by the Philippine Mathematical Society to train for the International Math Olympiad to be held at Hanoi, Vietnam in July this year. His training will start this coming weekend of April to first week of May at the Ateneo de Manila University.

CEI to hold environment forum

The Center for Environmental Initiatives in Negros Occidental will hold the Earth Day 16th Environment Forum 1:30 p.m. April 26 at the Governor's Conference Hall, Capitol Building, Bacolod City, a press release from organizers said.

Gov. Joseph Maraņon will give the welcome remarks and message, followed by a presentation from the ethnic/modern band, Pinikpikan. To be discussed are the updates on oil recovery operations of the Guimaras oil spill, administrative hearing of Department of Environment and Natural Resources Office personnel involved in the cutting of trees in Don Salvador Benedicto, and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan resolution requesting DENR to identify and include in their program reforestation, the press release said.
