A barangay captain of Candoni town is seeking the disqualification of mayoralty candidate Cicero Borromeo for allegedly being an American citizen, while Pulupandan bet Crisanto Mondia has asked the Commission on Elections to dismiss a petition to declare him a nuisance.

Barangay Captain Rolando Gequilan of Caningay, Candoni Friday filed a petition before the COMELEC against Borromeo asking that his certificate of candidacy be cancelled, a copy of which furnished the DAILY STAR by lawyer Jovim Entila yesterday showed.

Polls will be clean
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Commissioner Resurreccion Borra Saturday said the Commission on Elections will ensure that the truth will prevail in the May 14 polls and that those proclaimed winners will be the true choices of the people.

Today the country has 45 million voters after the cleansing of its lists by the COMELEC led to the removal of 1.1 million names of people who had died, transferred or failed to vote in previous polls, he said. Borra said peaceful polls start with a clean voters list.

The issue of cheating is a perception, not a reality, but many candidates who cannot accept defeat make the COMELEC their punching bag, he said.

Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao knocks down Mexican Jorge Solis twice.*

Filipino boxing hero Manny Pacquiao continued to validate his status as the world's most exciting fighter yesterday when he scored a second consecutive knockout victory over another Mexican in San Antonio, Texas.

Pacquiao, misfiring in the early rounds, showed he had more than enough weapons in his arsenal when he decked lanky Jorge Solis twice, before dealing the Mexican super featherweight his first loss in 36 professional fights.

The end came 1 minute and 16 seconds into the eighth round, after a flurry of combinations punctuated by a hard right hand sent Solis down for good at the Alamodome. moremoremore
