Army head visits bishop

The newly-installed 3rd Infantry Division commander of the Philippine Army called on Dumaguete Bishop John Du Tuesday to solicit the prelate's support for the peace and development mission in Negros Island.

Du said he appreciated Maj. Gen. Jovenal Narcise for the gesture, for apprising him of what the Army is doing in the island, and discussing issues that affect the lives of people under the Diocese, especially the Army's counter insurgency operation. Narcise was accompanied by 303rd Brigade commander B/Gen Gregorio Fajardo, deputy group commander of the 7RCDG Lt. Col. Claro de Guzman, and Lt Col Marcos Norman Flores Jr., commanding officer of 61st Infantry Hunter Battalion which covers southern Negros.

The bishop was briefed on the ongoing peace agreement between the government and the Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade, particularly on the cessation of hostilities and confidence-building stage of the peace pact.

Narcise's group also called on Gov. George Arnaiz where they tackled security preparations for the elections in the island. He also inspected the new transient facility in Camp Fernandez in Agan-an, Sibulan town and visited the bishop of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental.

Narcise said the 3rd ID leadership will continue to visit other bishops in the different dioceses to ask for their prayers and support for the Army, particularly in its role as guardian of democracy, defender of the nation and servants of the people.*JG
