ABAP vows to deliver
first RP Olympic gold
BY CEDELF TUPAS

The Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines yesterday pledged to deliver the country its first-ever Olympic gold medal when the Summer Games are held in Beijing, China next year.

Manny Lopez, the ABAP president, made the bold prediction at the PSA Forum in Manila yesterday when he also stressed that Negrense pug Joan Tipon, a gold medalist in the Asian Games last year, is not seeded outright to the national squad.

"They (Tipon and Asian Games gold medalist Violito Payla) have to earn their spots. That's why they need to be in great condition always," Lopez said. Tipon told the DAILY STAR that he is accepting Lopez's challenge, saying he will do everything possible to win an Olympic gold medal that has eluded his fellow Negrense boxers Roel and Onyok Velasco and Leopoldo Serrantes in the past.

ETCS, Talisay clouters
win; City High falls short

Education Training and Center School-Domingo Lacson National High School, losing finalist in last year's Junior League (13-14) World Series, moved a step closer to booking a return trip to the prestigious tournament, after claiming its first win in the 2007 Philippine Series in Batangas yesterday.

Bannering the Bacolod-Negros Occidental LL Charter, the ETCS-DLNHS clouters whipped Nueva Ecija, 26-3, in just three innings at the Altura ballfield to lead the three-team division. The Bacoleñas face International Little League of Manila at 8 a.m. today for their second assignment in the double-round robin tournament.

Local pug Pabila
shines in Azerbaijan

Bacolod-born boxer Albert Pabila stepped up his bid for a spot in the 2007 Southeast Asian Games and the 2008 Summer Olympics by ruling the lightflyweight division of an invitational tournament in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The victory of the 22-year-old Pabila, who hails from Barangay Handumanan, was relayed to the DAILY STAR by fellow RP Team member and Asian Games gold medalist Joan Tipon, whose slot in the Azerbaijan tilt was given to Bagoeño Junel Cantancio.

Cantancio, however, suffered a first-round defeat against a Jordanian fighter, whom Tipon said he has already beaten in the finals of the Tammer Cup in Finland last year.
