Defending champion and host Negros Occidental heads the eight-team cast that will vie for the National Men's Open Football Championships slated April 24-29 at the Panaad pitch in Bacolod City.

The other teams that qualified for the tournament are last year's losing finalist National Capital Region, Masbate and Baguio from Luzon and North Cotabato, Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental and Davao from Mindanao.

Powerhouse Iloilo, which was eliminated by Negros in the semifinals last year, is the other Visayan team in the competition, after it defeated Cebu and Negros Oriental in the all-Visayas qualifying stage in Barotac Nuevo over the weekend.

Javier scores knockout win

Round 1's John Vincent Uy Javier dug deep in his fighting arsenal to score a knockout win over Victor Torre of Team Xanga Saturday night in one of the supporting bouts of 'Fight Night' at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center.

The fight was stopped with less than a minute left in the fourth round after Javier brought Torre down on his knees with a big right hook.

It was earlier reported that Torre won the bout based on the official results given to this reporter by tournament officials at the end of the event.

Lopue's routs MEB cagers

Coming off a last-minute setback Wednesday, Lopue's bounced back with a 118-88 demolition of an undermanned MEB Construction Friday night in the Probac InterBarkada Basketball Tournament at the West Negros College Gym.

RB Chua, Yen Dolar, Robby Jalando-on scored in double digits to help crush 10-man squad, which had no answer to the 3-point barrage of Jalando-on. The MEB cagers were led by Berto Celis with 27 points and new member Christian Castro with 12 points.

MEB will have the services of Ryan Javellana, Popoy Jamero, Roy2 Pedreso and Rex Bayer in their coming games. *PP
