Discover Redang

A glossy brochure at the counter of the Bacolod Convention Plaza at the height of the Southeast Asian Games said: "Break away. There's little to Redang beyond sun, sand and sea - and that's its particular charm".

The destination it promotes is an archipelago of nine islands considered as the gem of Malaysia in the South China Sea. Home to a community of about 250 fishermen and their families, Redang is located about 45 kms. off the shores of Terangganu.

It is a historic area as it served as a traders' passage between the Malaya Archipelago and Siam (now Thailand).

The main island is Pulao Redang, where 12 resorts attract travelers year-round.

Redang's attractions, obviously, are its sandy beaches, crystal-clear blue sea and underwater world. Also drawing crows are the Pulau Redang Marine Marks Malaysia, designated by the government for the conservation of the unique Redang ecosystem.

The islands have among the best coral reefs in the world. It has more than 20 diving sports, which include shipwreck areas, a submerged, mysterious chamber and a black coral garden. The area holds the remains of H.M.S Prince of Wales and H. M. S Repulse which sank during WWII, setting the stage of the Japanese occupation of Malaya.

Visitors swear Redang is "the place for adventure holiday to get away and relax in solitude and serene beauty of the tropic isles. Nature is at its best here - a blend of fresh air, gleaming soft, white sand and crystal-clear water."
