heroes' welcome
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

The junior girls' 13-14 softball team of Education and Training Center School received a hero's welcome yesterday upon their arrival in Bacolod City after a successful stint in the United States.

ETCS had its best finish in the World Series last month by placing first runner-up in the junior girls' division in Kirkland, Washington, before ruling the 2006 Olympia Friendship Games.

The Bacolod-based squad, mentored by Vilda Benjamin, Lagrimas Ciokon and Dina Barlita, were welcomed by Councilor Ana Marie Palermo and the ETCS Drum and Bugle Corps during its arrival at the Philippine Airlines terminal at 6 a.m. yesterday.

Ramil Calangan, who poured in 12 points, spearheaded the SJI-A offensives to give the Johnians the solo lead with a 2-0 win-loss card.

Nat'l swim try-outs
at Panaad slated

The Provincial Government of Negros Occidental has approved the Sta. Fe Aquatics-Negros Swimming Association's request for the use of the Panaad Olympic pool as venue of the Philippine Amateur Swimming Association-sanctioned age-group try-outs from Sept. 9-10 in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

Rafael "Bukay" Nava, SFA-NSA secretary, said that Sangguniang Panlalawigan Member Emilio "Dino" Yulo III helped in processing the association's request for the approval of Capitol.

Bacolod will host the Western Visayas leg of the two-day tournament that will serve as a try-out for future tankers in the RP junior swim team, Nava said. Try-outs in Central and Eastern Visayas, Luzon and Mindanao will also be staged with the winners advancing to the national finals in Laguna in December, he said.
