Two students of the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos
High School Department in Bacolod City topped literary competitions
in the Western Visayas recently, a UNO-R press release said.
Charisse Bayona, a third year high school student,
was champion in the Voice of Our Youth Impromptu Speaking Contest-Zone
Level of the Rotary Club held at the L' Fisher Hotel in Bacolod.
She will represent the mother club at the district
level competition in Iloilo City in October, together with her coach,
Rosaline Gustilo. Elonah Jade Bioneda, a senior, was chosen as one
of the two Outstanding Journalists, from 115 delegates to the 2006
Philippine Information Agency Basic Journalism Seminar-Workshop
conducted at the Grand Regal Hotel, the press release said.
Bioneda was cited as the Most Promising Editorial
Writer and Most Promising News, Feature and Sports Writer.
She was also adjudged champion in Feature
Writing and made it to the Top 10 Outstanding Journalists in the
1st Regional Cluster Journalism Writeshop - Bacolod City Cluster
and Golden Pen Awards held at Domingo Lacson National High School,
the press release added.
Other writers of Starlight, the official publication
of the UNO-Recoletos High School Department. Maria Lelis Palmares
ranked third in News Writing and runner-up in Poetry Writing while
Leanne Marie Torrato and Andrea Ruffa Bayona were runners up in
News Writing and Sports Writing, respectively.
Nadine Jensen Hautea was Most Promising Feature
Writer while cartoonist Ryo Tupas was among the Most Promising Editorial
Cartoonists.
The Starlight delegation also ranked 1st in Lay-out
Design and recognized as Most Promising in Photojournalism, the
press release said. Adviser of the UNO-Recoletos High School publication
is Ma. Alon Conta - Song, the press release added.*

qualifications announced
MassKara Queen pageant production supervisor ABS-CBN
announced yesterday the qualifications to be met by candidates for
this year's beauty tilt, a press release from the station said.
Aspirants should be female with at least one
year residency in Bacolod; a bonafide student of a Bacolod-based
university or college on the date of application; 18-22 years old
(during the reigning period); at least 5 feet 5 inches in height;
with beautiful countenance and proportionate body measurement; of
good moral character with no criminal record (character references
in application form); with good scholastic record and at least a
secondary school graduate; single, with no marital or post-natal
records; and must not have participated in previous Masskara Queen
pageants
Interested parties may submit their application forms,
bio-data and photo (3R close-up and full body shot) to ABS-CBN TV

cartoon exhibit set
The Japan Foundation, Manila and the Shangri-La Plaza
Mall will present the "9th Asian Cartoon Exhibit: How's IT in Asia"
Sept. 23-24 at the 4th Level, Shaw Hallway, Shangri-La Plaza Mall,
Mandaluyong City.
This is in celebration of the Philippines-Japan
Friendship, a press release from the Japan Foundation said yesterday.
Eight leading cartoonists from China, India,
Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand and the Philippines
have placed together 80 new cartoon works depicting the IT situations
in their respective nations, it also said. Representing the Philippines
is Bayani "Barry" Jose, a graphic designer, cartoonist for a news
magazine and various publications, and senior graphic designer and
art director in Singapore.
