All RP boxers capable of bringing home gold
La Salle golfest slated
Negrenses make initial cut for AFF qualifiers

ASIAN GAMES UPDATE
All RP boxers capable
of bringing home gold
BY CEDELF TUPAS

Even without its most accomplished pug, the president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines yesterday expressed optimism that members of the RP Team who will see action in the Doha Asian Games can break the 12-year gold drought for the sport.

"All of them are gold medal prospects," ABAP president Manny Lopez told the DAILY STAR last night in a phone interview.

The last time boxing made a golden harvest in the Asiad was in 1994 in Hiroshima, where Negrenses Mansueto "Onyok" Velasco, Elias Recaido and Reynaldo Galido accounted for three golds. Lopez, however, added that the door is already closed for multi-titled Harry Tañamor, leaving the door open for Negrenses Godfrey Castro of Cadiz City and Albert Pabila.

La Salle golfest slated

The La Salle High School Jubilarians Class of 1982 with the University of St. La Salle Alumni Association are staging the 7th La Salle Alumni Open Golf Tournament from Nov. 4-5 at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club.

About 200 golfers are seeing action in five divisions, namely, Class A, B, C, D and ladies, a press release from organizers said. Among the hole-in-one prizes of the tournament, chaired by Jimmy Yusay, include a Chevrolet Optra, Honda motorcycle and split type airconditioner, the press release added.

Negrenses make initial
cut for AFF qualifiers

Bacolod-based Ali Rojas and Bagoeño goalkeeper Edward Sacapaño have been included to the initial list of players submitted by the Philippine Football Federation for the Asean Football Federation Cup qualifiers that starts Nov. 12 at the Panaad Park and Stadium.

An influential midfielder, who can also play up front, Rojas has been instrumental for the University of St. La Salle's success in the men's open tournaments, while Sacapaño, a member of the Philippine Army, has seen action for West Negros College.

Also part of the team are Dumaguete-born players Jerome Orcullo, Jeffrey Liman, defender Wilson de la Cruz hails from Iloilo but has played for WNC in many tournaments, just like midfielder Roel Gener. The list will be trimmed down to 18 a few days before the Philippines takes on Laos in its first game on Nov. 12.
