FEU rules University Games
SWEEP IN VOLLEYBALL
CAP TAMS' CAMPAIGN

BY CEDELF TUPAS & CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

Far Eastern University finished its campaign with a sweep of the volleyball competitions yesterday, even as Emilio Aguinaldo College clinched its third men's basketball crown in four years at the close of the 11th National University Games in Bacolod City.

Host University of St. La Salle emerged as the top local school with victories in men's football and sepak takraw, where the Bacolod squad downed University of Mindanao, 2-0, in the finals.

La Salle nipped West Negros College, 5-4, on penalties in the men's football finals. With both USLS and WNC already claiming a title each, the football victory at the USLS pitch allowed the La Sallians to gain the edge over the Wesnecans, who also saw their bid in men's basketball end in a semifinal defeat at the hands of eventual champion, EAC, 67-68.

Moments after sending the ball into the back of the net, St. La Salle's Floriano Pasilan glanced at his teammates, took off his jersey and gleefully ran half the length of the field with his arms sideward, a trademark celebration for the prized striker. Had he taken off his shirt in regulation play, he would have been slapped an automatic yellow card.

But he just nailed the spotkick that paved the way for La Salle's third straight University Games title and, if only, for the fact that they overcame a tough battle with a gritty West Negros College squad Saturday afternoon, any kind of celebration would be warranted.

in Pohang MassKara badminton event

Bacoleņos Alex Borromeo and Salvador Diesmo retained their championship in the men's open doubles category of the 2006 Pohang MassKara Badminton Invitational over the weekend at the Pohang Badminton Center in Bacolod City.

Borromeo and Diesmo, who donned the colors of Pohang-Riverside College, disposed Far Eastern University's tandem of Reczon Salvaleon and Jimson Dionisio, 23-19, 23-15, in the finals for the crown.

After the conquest of their Manila-based opponents, Borromeo and Diesmo then teamed up with separate partners to post a 1-2 finish in the mixed open doubles hostilities.
