Far Eastern University finished its campaign with a sweep of the
volleyball competitions yesterday, even as Emilio Aguinaldo College
clinched its third men's basketball crown in four years at the close
of the 11th National University Games in Bacolod City.
Host University of St. La Salle emerged as the top local school
with victories in men's football and sepak takraw, where the Bacolod
squad downed University of Mindanao, 2-0, in the finals.
La Salle nipped West Negros College, 5-4, on penalties in
the men's football finals. With both USLS and WNC already claiming
a title each, the football victory at the USLS pitch allowed the
La Sallians to gain the edge over the Wesnecans, who also saw their
bid in men's basketball end in a semifinal defeat at the hands of
eventual champion, EAC, 67-68.
The Mustangs bounced back with an 81-72 win over University
of Iloilo yesterday to snare third place.
West Negros earlier ruled men's chess, while John B. Lacson
Colleges Foundation-Bacolod clinched its maiden crown in women's
taekwondo.
The Tamaraws walloped Philippine Christian University, 25-20,
25-19, 25-18, in less than an hour to retain their title, before
the Lady Tamaraws hacked out a resounding 25-21, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23
win over Santo Tomas at the St. La Salle College Covered Court.
The twin-kill in volleyball capped the Tamaraws' campaign that saw
them claim five titles in the week-long Games. FEU also topped men's
badminton and men's table tennis and women's athletics and missed
out on the men's athletics title by a single gold.
De La Salle, fielding a total of 11 squads, and College of
St. Benilde shared second overall with three crowns apiece.
The Archers claimed a record eighth straight title in women's
football, following victories in women's swimming and women's chess,
while CSB swept both divisions in lawn tennis and ruled women's
table tennis. Topping women's basketball was Ateneo de Manila University.
The other titlists were San Beda College (men's swimming), University
of the East (men's taekwondo), Santo Tomas (men's athletics).
In the last match of the Games, the Generals cruised to a relatively
easy 79-67 win over the Adamson Falcons at the St. La Salle Coliseum.
