Man gets life term
for selling shabu

The Regional Trial Court of Oriental Negros has found accused John Torres guilty beyond reasonable doubt of selling and possessing illegal drugs.

Judge Crescencio Rafael Tan Jr. of the RTC Branch 30 sentenced Torres to life imprisonment, and another 12 years and 1 day to 14 years maximum penalty for selling 0.04 gram shabu, and illegal possession of 0.08 gram of shabu, respectively, and to pay a fine of P900,000.

The poseur-buyer caught Torres in a buy-bust operation after he handled the marked money of P300 to the agent including the 0.04 gram shabu.

NegOr annual budget

DUMAGUETE CITY - The Sangguniang Panlalawigan took up on second reading on Thursday the P840 million annual budget of the provincial government.

The annual budget passed smoothly on first reading last week with only minor clarifications.

In his budget message to the provincial board, Oriental Negros Gov. George Arnaiz explained that, the 2007 annual appropriations would give more access to a greater percentage of the province's population in all basic needs and services. Arnaiz said he wants to open up more employment opportunities and ensure the equal distribution of wealth among the people.

'Operation Undas' launched

The Philippine National Police provincial command will be launching "Operation Undas" today to ensure the safety of Negrenses and visitors during the All Saints and All Souls celebration in Oriental Negros.

PNP provincial director SrSupt. Omar Buenafe disclosed that augmentation troops deployed during the Buglasan festivities will also be utilized during the observance of the tradition in all public and private cemeteries in Dumaguete City and in the province.

Police stations in the municipalities and cities were also ordered to ensure the smooth flow of traffic, and to guard against carrying of guns and bladed weapons.
