Sen. Jinggoy Estrada was elected yesterday as the new president of the Basketball Association of the Philippines during the BAP board of directors meeting at the Aloha Hotel in Manila.

Estrada will replace former Sen. Joey Lina announced his resignation Monday through a letter dated Oct.8 to the association's chairman Michel Lhuillier and the board of directors.

Lina also gave copies of his letter to Patrick Baumann, secretary-general of the international basketball federation, and business tycoon Manny Pangilinan, head of the three-man panel mandated by FIBA to steer the newly-formed Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas toward a Philippine Olympic Committee recognition. Rep. Monico Puentevella, POC first vice-president, said he does not know if the election of Estrada will improve the situation of Philippine basketball, but it will be discussed by the country's Olympic body during a meeting on Tuesday.

'AFF Cup security
Bacolod's concern'

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said that the city government will help ensure that proper security measures are followed when the qualifying stages of the Asean Football Federation Cup are held at the Panaad Park and Stadium next month.

"The peace and order situation will automatically become our obligation now, as in any event held in Bacolod. We will see to it that the security aspects are handled well," Leonardia said at a press conference yesterday. The AFF Cup marks the second time Bacolod hosts an international event in two years, after the city hosted five events of the 2005 Southeast Asian Games.

UNO-R, SJI cagers
claim third victories

University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos and St. John's Institute hammered different rivals over the weekend for their third victories in the NOPSSCEA elementary basketball tournament in Bacolod City.

The UNO-R cagers routed St. Rose of Lima School, 79-48, Saturday at the Riverside Covered Court in Group A, before posting an emphatic 80-19 triumph over Christian Academy of Bacolod at the University of St. La Salle-Integrated School Covered Court Sunday.

Sharing the top spot with Recoletos in Group A after also improving to 3-0 is SJI with resounding wins against Bacolod Christian Center, 126-43, and Tangub Christian Academy, 103-41.
