Seven students of the A Child's Place Kumon Center
in Bacolod City were awarded gold medals at the 2nd Visayas Advanced
Student Roll Presentation held at Marriott Hotel, Cebu City Saturday,
a press release from the school said yesterday.
Cited were Dawn Ong, Timothy Tan, Paolo and Samantha
Legaspi, Kib and Khryzia Montalbo and Sharmaine Vergara.They received
their awards from Norihiro Nakamura, the new general manager of
Kumon Philippines.
The ASHR is a standard set by Kumon to recognize
excellent academic achievements in the Kumon Method relative to
the students' grade level. It is based on the Kumon International
Standard, a benchmark that the students are encouraged to reach
in order to progress beyond heir grade level, the press release
said. Students who are doing at least 100 worksheets ahead, or are
six months above the KIS for their grade level, qualify for the
ASHR.
The supplemental program of the Kumon Method
includes elements essential for mastering advanced secondary school
mathematics and beyond, and for improving reading comprehension.
Kumon Philippines also awarded students who have
managed to surpass their school grade level by at least three years
as of May 2006, the press release added.*

commends heroism
of brothers from Binalbagan
Two brothers from Binalbagan, Negros Occidental,
were commended by the House of Representatives for their heroic
act of saving the lives of 12 passengers on a capsized boat in the
Pasig River two years ago.
House Resolution 151 sponsored by Rep. Ignacio
Arroyo Jr. (5th district, Neg.Occ.), and adopted by the House of
Representatives cited taxi driver Richard Serantes, 25, and his
brother, Radgie, 22, a construction worker, who resided in Brgy.
Pineda, Pasig City, for their act of self-sacrifice, a press release
from Arroyo's office said.
All the passengers survived but the brothers
died.
The House resolution described the Seranteses
as very good sons, responsible brothers and kind hearted neighbors,
sending money to their family in Negros Occidental monthly, the
press release said. "It is befitting to call them heroes as their
deed was motivated by a pure and noble desire to save their fellowmen
without fear and without expecting anything in return" the resolution
added.
The brothers were also recognized as symbols of bravery
and selflessness and thus, deserve the full appreciation and deed
gratitude of the Filipino nation, the resolution also said.*

CSC
confab conducted
A seminar on Leave Administration and Revised Performance
Evaluation System was conducted at the Kabankalan City Hall by the
Civil Service Commission, Bacolod City field office recently, a
Kabankalan press release said.
The seminar was attended by 85 employees from
the different departments of the city government.
Resource speakers were CSC special investigator
Vizur-Ty Gaitano, and personnel specialist Bethoven Tiano, both
of Civil Service Commission, Bacolod City field office.
They were introduced by Harriet C. Diaz, human resource
management officer of the city, while Vice Mayor Raul Rivera gave
the welcome remarks, the press release added.*
