Tanjay mayor amenable to
cluster for proposed landfill with 2 towns
BY RENE GENOVE

Tanjay Mayor Baltazar Salma said he is open to the idea of sharing the proposed landfill of his city with the neighboring towns of Pamplona and Amlan.

Salma said that, at this time, building a landfill is costly and local government units can not afford to build on their own.

But, he said, he would not take the initiative. If they wanted to cluster with Tanjay City, he would welcome them to save on millions of pesos needed to build one, he said.

Salma also said he is negotiating with the German Development Service for the construction of the landfill in Brgy. Azagra where the city has a five-hectare controlled dumpsite it bought for P2 million last year.

In Oriental Negros, only Bais City has an existing landfill while Bayawan City is finalizing its plan for one.

To prepare for the construction and operation of the facility. Salma said, infrastructure needs have been started. A tree-planting program was also launched.

The landfill accommodate the estimated 15 tons of wastes generated by the city daily.

But the volume could still decrease when the city government strengthens its solid waste management program.

Salma said he is confident that the barangay captains who joined the Lakbay Aral to observe the waste segregation scheme and materials recovery facility in Brgy. Sta. Filomena in Iloilo City, will help a lot in reducing the volume of waste at source, and make the landfill last longer.*RG
