BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

Two crucial offensive rebounds down the stretch lifted Bacolod Tay Tung High School past defending champion University of St. La Salle, 60-54, yesterday in the finals of the Basketball Unified Sports Group-Sharp Cup 17-Under Tournament at the Po Hang Gym in Bacolod City.

After swingman John Francis Espina missed on a drive attempt, Alvin Qua grabbed the offensive rebound under the basket to convert a point blank shot as he was fouled, giving BTTHS a 56-53 lead with 43.8 seconds left.

Qua, who was earlier named to the second mythical team, however missed his bonus free throw for the three-point play completion, but Alan Pol Morales kept the ball alive to give Tay Tung another possession.

Marquez decks Jaca

Jimrex Jaca, the boxer from Sibulan, Negros Oriental, lost to WBO interim featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez, who knocked out the Filipino fighter in the ninth round, a report in www.philboxing.com said.

Marquez, who survived three knockdowns and salvaged a draw against Manny Pacquiao in 2004, was cut over his right eye, which Jaca tried to take advantage of. However, a big Marquez left sent the Filipino for the full count at the 2:48 mark, allowing the Mexican to retain his title, the boxing website reported.

"Jaca showed tonight that he is such a durable fighter, and someone who has a great promise as a young fighter. He gave Marquez a great fight, and HBO was happy with Jaca's performance," said promoter Oscar De la Hoya in an interview with philboxing.com.
