La Salle cagers yield
reg'l crown to Ateneo
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

University of St. La Salle finished second after losing to Ateneo de Iloilo University in the passerelle finals of the Milo Best Center regional basketball tournament at the Iloilo Sports Complex over the weekend.

With the setback, USLS failed to defend its crown and will not be able to advance to the national finals where it placed runner-up last year against a towering De La Salle-Greenhills squad in Silay City.

The Troy Sarabia-mentored Baby Stingers actually had the upperhand going into the finals by defeating the Blue Eaglets in the elimination round after bowing to University of San Carlos. Ateneo earned the other championship berth after winning against the Cebu-based USC dribblers and prevailing in the quotient system.

Brgy. 34, coached by Bernabe Silpao, tripped Brgy. 28, 77-73, while the Estefania stalwarts posted a 61-53 trouncing of Brgy. 3.

Also coming away with victories were Brgy. 2, which scored a 77-57 demolition of Granada, and Brgy. 40, which nipped Tangub, 51-48.

Nopsscea to enlist
275 bets for Palaro

About 275 student-athletes will banner the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association in the 2006 Palarong Panlalawigan in December at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

Roger Banzuela, NOPSSCEA Sports Task Force chairman, yesterday said that 135 student-athletes will represent NOPSSCEA in the elementary level, while 140 competitors will see action in the high school hostilities. NOPSSCEA president Jean Rivera of Riverside College heads the delegation, while Fr. Noli Que, the association's vice-president, will act as the assistant of the contingent.

Banzuela, who will also serve as the NOPSSCEA athletic manager for the Provincial Meet, said that the elementary athletes will compete in 10 events, while the participants in the secondary category are eyeing the top honors in 12 disciplines.
