Barangay 10 relied on its stifling defense down the stretch to stun defending champion Singcang-Airport, 92-90, Sunday night in the 26-Under quarterfinals of the 2006 Monico Cup Summer Basketball Tournament at the jampacked Villamonte Gym in Bacolod City.

The hard-earned victory shoved the Brgy. 10 dribblers to the semifinal round together with Mandalagan, which eked out a 79-77 victory over Felisa in the other game.

Brgy. 10 will collide with the winner between Banago and Brgy. 7 on Thursday, while the Mandalagan cagers of coach Jose Falcis will battle the triumphant squad in the Tangub-Taculing encounter.

Martina sustains fiery form

Martina Guba downed separate rivals yesterday to obtain quarterfinal slots in the girls' 14 and 16-Under competitions of the Olivarez Age-Group Tennis Tournament in Parañaque.

Guba, who hails from La Carlota City, stamped her class against Manila netter Majah Assad, 6-0, 6-1, before hammering Kwin Buligan, 6-1, 6-1, for a place in the girls' 14-Under quarters.

The 13-year-old Guba also advanced into the last eight of the girls' 16-Under hostilities by posting resounding victories over Megan Real, 6-0, 6-0, and Nicole Eugenio, 6-1, 6-0.

Lhuillier bowlfest kicks off

The top three squads of the Negros Professional Bowlers Club-organized Four-Man Mixed Bowling Championship battle for the 2006 Cebuana Lhuillier Cup tonight at the Super Lanes of the Goldenfields Commercial Complex in Bacolod City.

In the first game, rated No.3 NPBC Tough Trucks headed by Jaime Chua will go up against No. 2, Capt. Sammy Gaitan's led Barangay I/ASSFBI at 6:30 p.m. The winner will earn the opportunity to vie for the tournament's crown versus top qualifier Silverado ASSFBI, of Edgar Allan Del Rosario and Cecil Silverio in a knock-out match to determine the champion.
