BALINAS CLAIMS 2ND GOLD IN SWIMMING
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

NAGA CITY -- Anna Mae Dionela and Maika De Oro delivered gold medals for Western Visayas yesterday in the girls' secondary and elementary divisions, respectively, to allow Region VI to pull away from the field as the 2006 Palarong Pambansa athletics hostilities enters its last day today at the Metro Naga Sports Complex Oval here.

Dionela and de Oro's victories came on the same day St. Benilde School swimmer Nikki Balinas claimed her second gold in the secondary girls' 100-m butterfly event.

Dionela, who hails from Bago City, ruled the secondary girls' 400-m run with a one minute and .4 seconds clocking to help the Region VI secondary girls' team accumulate 68 points ahead of Calabarzon (23), Central Visayas (16) and National Capital Region (15). De Oro, an incoming Grade 6 student of Education and Training Center School 2, brought home the gold in elementary girls' discus throw with a 29.97-meter heave to give WV 7 more points.

NAGA CITY -- Western Visayas collected 20 points yesterday to remain within striking distance of the elementary division crown in the 2006 Palarong Pambansa at the Metro Naga Sports Complex here.

But not even tropical depression "Caloy" could not halt the charge of the National Capital Region athletes who grabbed the limelight as they took the early lead in the elementary division with 32 points, while Central Luzon and Bicol have tallied 15.5 and 15 markers, respectively.

Region VI posted 10 points each in the sipa and elementary girls' taekwondo competitions. No titles have been decided in the secondary division as of press deadline. The morning athletics events and outdoor games yesterday were temporarily postponed because of the rain that was caused by the tropical depression. The games resumed after noontime.

Eligibility scandal
hits nat'l Palaro

NAGA CITY -- An eligibility scandal rocked the Palarong Pambansa yesterday after organizers discovered that two "overaged" athletes have been playing for the defending champion Calabarzon elementary baseball squad here.

But the head coach of Calabarzon's elementary baseball team, Noli Rejano, denied the allegations saying that the two players, whose names are being withheld, have passed both the regional and national screening committees.

One "overaged" player is 19 years old as confirmed by his mother, six years over the age limit in the elementary division.
