Palaro opens Sunday

NAGA CITY, BICOL --- Sports hostilities in the grassroots level of the elementary and secondary divisions take the limelight as the 2006 edition of the Palarong Pambansa kicks off at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Metro Naga Sports Complex here.

Vice-president Noli De Castro will keynote the opening ceremonies that will be preceded by a parade by the athletes and officials of the 17 regions that will see action in the national meet.

About 10,000 athletes, official and guests are expected to attend the opening rites that will also be attended by Senators Joker Arroyo and Francis Pangilinan, Nilda Noneal, education supervisor 2 of the Bicol Schools Division, said.

Gun Club of Negros Occidental standouts made their presence felt anew as it dominated the Panaad sa Negros Shooting Competition and the Anniversary Shootfest of the Central Negros Shooters Association in Bacolod City recently.

GCNO bets grabbed six crowns in the April 29-30 Panaad shootfest with 11-year-old Ralph Alvarez (open division), Tootsie Anglo (standard hi-cap civilian), Dindo Jalandoni (revolver), Benjie Siana (production civilian), Sipalay Mayor Oscar "Nonoy" Montilla (tyro standard) and Carlo Billones (tyro production) all ruling their respective divisions at the GCNO Shooting Range.

Alvarez, son of Rep. Genaro GR Alvarez (Negros Occ., 6th District), is the youngest shooter recognized by International Practical Shooting Confederation president Nick Alexackus.

Loptta entries win in Albay

The Lopue's Table Tennis Association escaped with a 3-2 victory over ANDRO Team to bring home the team crown of the 2nd Dr. Tirzo O. Delos Reyes Sr. Memorial National Table Tennis Tournament at Guinobatan, Albay recently.

LOPTTA standout Stephen Andrew Timson also took the 16-Under title, while Christian Vicente of University of Santo Tomas and Jethro Yatco of the Guinobatan Table Tennis Club finished second and third, respectively.

Mark Francis Jimenez started LOPTTA's finals bid in a bright note after edging former Philippine Team member Jojo Almazan of ANDRO Team, 3-2.
