Five of 18 Filipino seafarers missing after a Greek bulk carrier sank off the Coast of Port Elizabeth in South Africa Wednesday are from southern Negros Occidental.

The five Negrense crewmen of Alexandros T were identified as Jose Ashley Vasquez, 31; Paulie Navarete and Warren Cabia of Hinigaran, and Louie Deriada of La Granja and Ruson Cabugwason of Ubay, La Carlota City, DYEZ Aksyon Radyo reported last night.

Flocy Cabia, 57, mother of Warren, told the DAILY STAR the Inter-Orient Agency that hired her son informed them that he and four others from Negros Occidental were among those missing.moremoremore

Killer highway

The so-called "killer highway" in northern Negros claimed the life of an 11-year-old child on Thursday - this time at Crossing Lugway in Silay City.

The death of 11-year-old Jonathan Padronia has brought to seven the number of fatalities from road accidents along the highway of Silay and Victorias since last month.

Supt. Celestino Guara yesterday said Padronia was crossing the highway of Crossing Luguay in Silay City, when he was bumped by a pick-up driven by Eriberto Latriz at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday. moremoremore

STL in Neg. Occ

The League of Municipalities of the Philippines-Negros Occidental chapter has passed a resolution favorably inviting the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office to conduct the Small Town Lottery project in the 19 municipalities of the province, Gov. Joseph Maraņon said yesterday.

Resolution No. 1 Series of 2006 that was unanimously passed is signed by league president Manuel Escalante III and secretary general Enrico Elumba, a copy furnished the DAILY STAR by the governor showed.

The LMP resolution comes amid the Negros Occidental provincial board's opposition to the entry of STL in the province. moremoremore
