Local chessers grab early
lead in regional event

Bacoleņos Raymund Dela Peņa and Trinie Olmedo swept their two assignments each yesterday to spearhead the locals' domination at the start of the Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia Cup chess tournament at the Bacolod Pavillion Resort and Restaurant in Bacolod City.

By beating their first two opponents, Dela Peņa and Olmedo posted two match points apiece after the second round, sharing the early lead with Bacoleņos Ted Montoyo, Jordaine Tupas, Warlito Dymosco and Xavier Verdun.

Also registering two match points each yesterday were Rocky Pabalan, Marvin Ting and Romeo Cruz.

BUHAIN TO KEYNOTE RITES

The induction of the new officers of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines-Bacolod is set at 7 p.m. tonight at the Casino Filipino Hotel in Bacolod City.

Games and Amusement Board chairman Eric Buhain will be the keynote speaker, while GAB commissioner Alex Paglumotan will be the inducting officer.

Rep. Monico Puentevella, Gov. Joseph Maraņon and Mayor Evelio Leonardia have also been invited to attend the induction rites that will gather the different sports leaders in Negros Occidental.

Panique seeks another
tri-mountain race title

About 150 long distance runners are expected compete in the 8th 21-Kilometer Tri-Mountain Resort Marathon that kicks off at 6 a.m. tomorrow at the Kipot resort in Bago City.

From Kipot, the competing marathoners will proceed to the Buenos Aires mountain resort before finishing at Guintubdan, Ignacio Denila, executive assistant of the Bago City Mayor's Office, said yesterday.

Leading the field is defending champion Eric Panique of Himamaylan City as he aims to retain his crown against long-distance runners from Antique and Iloilo and from the cities of Cadiz, Escalante, Victorias, Silay and La Carlota.
