Upland folk stage
peace caravans
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Anti-communist groups whose members are victims of rebel atrocities, also marked the 37th founding anniversary of the New People's Army on March 29 by holding a peace caravan in Vallehermoso and Guihulngan towns in Oriental Negros, which was participated in by about 1,000 people, the military said.

The peace caravan also coincided with the launching of the 303rd Infantry Brigade's "Oplan Kingfisher", which is aimed at dismantling existing guerilla fronts of the New People's Army in Negros.

Lt. Col. Jess Manangquil, 11th Infantry Battalion commander, yesterday said the peace caravan participants, majority of whom came from the upland barangays of San Carlos City, Negros Occidental and Guihulngan and Vallehermoso in Oriental Negros, have again denounced the atrocities committed by the New People's Army in Negros island.

Man runs amuck, is killed

A man who was reportedly under the influence of intoxicating liquor went amuck and harassed villagers early Tuesday morning but died when his head hit a rock after collapsing from a series of beatings inflicted by another man in Brgy. Lumbangan, Mabinay, Oriental Negros.

Police identified the victim as Mario Marimat of Brgy. Luyang, Mabinay and the suspect as James Kenneth Cabugnason, 21, single.

Witnesses told the police that Marimat, who was holding a bottle of rum, and brandishing a bolo arrived in their village at about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Battery-operated motorcycles
will not be registered - LTO

The Dumaguete City Land Transportation Office will not register battery-operated motorcycles, unless its central office issues guidelines, local LTO chief Ely Cabanag said.

Cabanag disclosed that a local motorcycle dealer came to his office to inquire if his units can be registered with the LTO.

He, however, said that, in the absence of guidelines and directives from their national office, such motorcycles run the risk of being flagged down for violating existing rules.
