The Dumaguete City Land Transportation Office will not register
battery-operated motorcycles, unless its central office issues guidelines,
local LTO chief Ely Cabanag said.
Cabanag disclosed that a local motorcycle dealer came to his
office to inquire if his units can be registered with the LTO.
He, however, said that, in the absence of guidelines and
directives from their national office, such motorcycles run the
risk of being flagged down for violating existing rules.
Battery-operated motorcycles are environmentally friendly
and require no emission testing, and can be charged within six hours.
Cabanag said he is hoping that this concern can be resolved
as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, the LTO office expects to acquire a mobile patrol
vehicle equipped with electronic gadgets.
Cabanag said one of the functions of the LTO patrol vehicle
is for the immediate identification of owners of vehicles with doubtful
plate numbers.
He said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo promised to give
the vehicle, if LTO district offices are performing well in terms
of revenues being generated.
In 2004, the local LTO office collected P46.72 million while
in 2005, it generated a total collection of P54.49 million or an
increase of 16.62 percent.
The collection is generated from registration of vehicles, driver's
licenses, renewal and enforcement of traffic laws, Cabanag said.*JG
