A man who was reportedly under the influence of intoxicating liquor
went amuck and harassed villagers early Tuesday morning but died
when his head hit a rock after collapsing from a series of beatings
inflicted by another man in Brgy. Lumbangan, Mabinay, Oriental Negros.
Police identified the victim as Mario Marimat of Brgy. Luyang,
Mabinay and the suspect as James Kenneth Cabugnason, 21, single.
Witnesses told the police that Marimat, who was holding a
bottle of rum, and brandishing a bolo arrived in their village at
about 12:40 a.m. Tuesday.
The victim then started shouting and waving the bolo, terrifying
the villagers who scattered in different directions, police said.
Cabugnason said he failed to get away and was cornered so
he picked up a piece of wood and hit Marimat three times, causing
the victim to fall, his head hitting a rock.
Learning the man had died, Cabugnason turned himself over to the
barangay captain of Lumbangan who then endorsed him to the Mabinay
police station.*
