Beach volley tourney
draws 12 squads
BY CHRISTIAN IRL TAN

Twelve squads will vie for the championship of the Oriental Negros All-Ladies Beach Volley National Open Invitational tournament in Dumaguete City next month.

Spearheading the participating teams is the Philippine Navy that will be represented by Cecille Tabuena and Michelle Laborte, who bannered the RP women's squad during the 23rd Southeast Asian Games beach volleyball hostilities in Bacolod City last year.

The University of St. La Salle and University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos lady spikers will also see action in the event, while Cebu-based teams eyeing the title are Southwestern University and University of San Jose Recoletos.

University of San Agustin will be the lone Iloilo team that will compete in the tournament, while volleybelles coming from Foundation University, Negros Oriental State University, Bayawan, Tanjay and Oriental Negros have also signified their entry as well as St. Benilde School. Roger Banzuela, president of the Beach Volleyball Association of the Philippines, said the slots have only been limited to 12 teams because the games will start at 4 p.m.

BVAP is planning to stage more beach volleyball tournaments after the successful campaign of the Philippines in the sport during the SEA Games, Banzuela, who also serves as the president of the Philippine Volleyball Federation, said.

Filipino-Americans Heidi Ilustre and Diane Pascua, who donned the colors of the RP women's team B, snatched bronze medals during the biennial meet. *CIT
